It is a 16th century old manor with a closed garden, typical of the architecture of the region. At ground floor level, kitchen, dining room, salon, pool room, little salon, library/tv room, hunting room, 1 bathroom and 1 double bedroom. At upper floor, 8 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms.

“The old manor is distinguished by its old house (16th century) and by its porch (dated 1632) at the edge of the road going towards the sea, between the Vaumicel manor and the church. The shell-shaped sculptures show that it was a stopover for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela” (Notes by Arcisse de Caumont, historian of Normandy).

D-DAY:

The manor of l’Ormel was the theatre of a heavy military engagement between German and American troops, and witnessed the heroic deeds of a company led by Lt. Taylor. On the morning of June 6, the Ormel manor (which was occupied by the Germans) was reached very early on and taken over by a group of daring Americans, thus thwarting local counter-offensive attempts by the German troops. In the context of the otherwise very heavy and protracted fighting that took place on “Bloody Omaha”, this act of personal bravery is typical of the decisive local initiatives that led to the eventual success of D-Day operations in Omaha beach.

“A section of Company B / 116, 30 GIs commanded by Lieutenant Taylor had disembarked from an LCA around 7.15 am. At this time, this stretch of beach was little affected by German fire. No mortar shells either. Probably they were too far from the strong defenses of the descent of Vierville. Taylor quickly drove his section across the beach and over the pebbles, still losing 4 men killed and 2 machine gun injured. A few meters to his right, Taylor saw, leaving another LCA, the lieutenants Harold Donaldson and Emil Winkler killed.

Without stopping to think, Taylor led his section in a line, at the top of the cliff, passing by chance between the WN70 (above the Villa Chevallier) and WN71 (above the bar of the current Beach) , then on Vierville, near the Gicqiau garage , where he arrived around 8 or 9:00 a.m. Luck chased him. In an hour or two of combat, he swept a group of Germans there without losing a man. When the skirmish subsided, he was joined by Sergeant Pearce with a small squad of another LCA from Cie B / 116, landed much further east towards St-Laurent. They counted, there were 28 in all and they thought they were the only survivors of the 6 dispersed LCA of the B / 116.”
